Overview

The Space Colony v. This patch has been incorporated in the Space Colony HD re-release, so there's not need to download it if you have the HD version. The following information has been taken directly from the Readme.txt file included with the patch download, edited just a little for clarity.

Take a tycoon style game, add in one part Sims, one bunch of quirky characters and plant them in outer space to create the PC game known as Space Colony. Created by FireflyStudios, makers of the Stronghold series, and released by Take Two Interactivein 2003, Space Colony will have you fulfilling your mission on a faraway planet, repelling aliens and managing a diverse, dysfunctional crewwho can fight, form friendships, argue and fall in love with each other.

Making money for the mega-corporation that sent you out to space will require the hard work of your crew who hold the keys to victory and defeat. Managing the stereotyped personalities to get the job done lies in your capable hands.

Gameplay

Upon loading Space Colony, you'll be taken to the main menu where youcan click: Play Space Colony, Sandbox Mode or Galaxy Mode. Play Space Colonystarts the story line mode with two campaign paths – economics or military. Economicshas you focus on meeting the mission goals such as attracting tourists andbalancing the personalities of your crew. The missions are prettystraightforward but get harder as you progress. The military story has manymore missions and requires meeting your goals while balancing crewproblems and the occasional alien attack.

In the storyline each mission has youbuild on your previous base so what you do in one mission and how your crewreacts to one another will carry over to the next mission, leading to easier orharder missions depending on how you play and initially have the characters interact.

Sandbox Mode lets you play without any goals. As a result,you can experiment and just have some silly fun having your crew go at oneanother. However, as there is no end goal it can get boring pretty fast.

Galaxy Mode is a combination of story line and sandbox mode whereyou can choose one of many different planets to start on and have to fulfillyour mission objectives. There are usually only a couple missions on eachplanet and each planet is independent of each other.

Crew

There are up to 20 different crew members who may beassigned on any one mission though Venus Jones, a red head balanced in almost all skills, will be with you for every mission and could be said to be the main character. Each crew member has a unique personality and this is where SpaceColony resembles the Sims. All crew members need to eat, sleep, shower, haveinteraction with one another, etc. Some crew have one or more stars next tocertain characteristics like sleeping meaning that one characteristic is themost important to them and raising it back to full will offer the mostproductivity to them.

It is important to keep your crew's needs satisfied, becauseif you don't then they will not work or obey the tasks you give them. Each crewmember has a limited amount of time in which they will work to fulfill a given task. If a crew member has too many unfulfilled needs then their timeto work will decrease even faster.

Assigning a crew member a job requires that the crew memberhave the right skill. If a crew member has no skill in mining then they cannotmine titanium or silicon. You can train your crew members in new skills byusing a library, which takes a good amount of time and is based on the person'sintelligence or by using a training pod which costs a lot of money but givesalmost instant training.

Each crew member in Space Colony has a differentpersonality and stereotype. Combine it with the voice overs and you'll get entertainingdialogue when two personalities interact. It cannot get much more stereotypical when you have a blond girl named Candy who loves shopping and is unskilled at almost everything. Or take Billy Bob, a heavyset guy with a country personality who likes to stare atthings. Can you guess where he excels? Chicken Farming, which is one source of food for your colony.

The relationships in Space Colony are important as two crewmembers may be romantic, friends or downright hate each other. If two peoplehate each other and they come in contact, instead of dialogue they will breakinto a fight leaving one injured and needing a trip to the med bay. Fortunatelythere are counseling chairs to rectify differences, though you have to send thecrew members there manually. Sometimes crew members also go insane requiringthem to go to a detention cell or a counseling robot until they are cured.

Tips for Success

1. Build beds right away and assign your crew to them sothey can sleep when tired

2. Crew members who require lots of social interaction arebest used as cleaners

3. More stars next to a skill means a higher proficiency init

4. Don't let crew members die as they won't be revived untilthe next mission

5. Use common sense

Opinion

Space Colony is a lot of fun, especially the storyline. However Space Colony doesn't have long term appeal. It is great for a while but once beat, you probably won't come back to it. The music is solid and fits the mood as do the voice overs. Those who love playing The Sims will be comfortable with the characters and meeting their needs, as it is simpler in Space Colony than in The Sims. Managing the mission goals, building structures and fighting aliens add more of the classic tycoon feel.

Yet there are a few downsides that lessened the experience. Camera controls cannot be switched or rotated and crew members would sometimes abandon their post at the most inopportune times due to needing to relieve a need. Overall a pretty solid game. The price on Amazon is really cheap so it's a good way to pass some time.

Space Colony is a real-time strategy video game developed by Firefly Studios and published by Gathering of Developers in 2003. Aspyr Media released a Mac OS X port in 2004. The game was re-released as digital HD version on November 8, 2012.^[1]

Gameplay[edit]

The basic premise is similar to The Sims in that the player has to care for the needs of several individuals - here each with a unique predefined personality and different abilities. However the game is mission orientated and involves setting up a futuristic base and carrying out missions which involve mining minerals, developing relationships, harvesting resources to prevent running out of oxygen and power, collecting food, and fighting back alien attacks.

A bonus campaign was released in 2004. It has 5 missions and takes place on the planet Cobash.

Characters[edit]

There are 20 main characters in this game. All the characters' attitudes are determined by their happiness. It is necessary to meet the characters' needs and demands so their work levels don't drop. Therefore, they need enough oxygen, power and food or entertaining with bars, clubs, saunas and over other 100 buildings available. Mental health is also an issue in a small colony in space, so meditation spaces, psychotherapy and even detention pods can be of use.

Mini game[edit]

A 2D action-oriented mini-game called Alien Horde was created to promote Space Colony. Players assume the role of Space Colony's leading lady Venus. She has to fight back alien attacks and try to rescue Space Colony's hard-working Scandinavian biker Stig, plus she has to prevent running out of oxygen. Alien Horde is open-ended, and the gameplay becomes more intense with each level. Beside the same setting the gameplay of the minigame has not much in common with the more strategic-oriented gameplay of Space Colony.

HD version[edit]

Space Colony HD^[2] was released on November 8, 2012. The new version of the game features high-definition graphics and a wider field of view, with support for resolutions up to 2560x1600. The re-release includes 8 new official bonus campaigns and the previously released Cobash bonus campaign plus 6 user-created campaigns from SpaceColonyFans.net. The game is compatible with Windows 2000/XP/7/8/10. Purchases from GOG.com include the Alien Horde mini-game, HD wallpaper, a digital manual and the soundtrack of the game.^[3] A separate HD patch for owners of the previous version was released on November 12, 2012.

Steam Edition[edit]

Space Colony: Steam Edition was released on April 30, 2015. This version includes a number of exclusive Steam features such as achievements, trading cards, and Steam Cloud for saved games. Also supported are high resolution graphics settings of the previous HD version, allowing players to view their entire colony while playing on a single screen. The game is compatible with Windows XP through 10.^[4]

On Metacritic, a review aggregator, Space Colony has a score of 75/100 based on 21 reviews.^[8] Dan Adams of IGN rated it 7.5/10 and wrote that it is 'almost great' but has too many annoyances, such as the characters' irritatingly quirky personalities.^[9] In his review for GameSpot, Andrew Park called it 'an interesting game but not a truly compelling one'. In rating it 6.7/10, Park criticized the lack of variety in gameplay, as each problem can be solved in very similar ways, and there are few spontaneous interactions between the colonists.^[10]Eurogamer's Martin Taylor rated the game 6/10 and recommended it only to fans of The Sims, who might not mind the requirement of constant supervision.^[11]GamePro rated it 4.5/5 stars and called it 'a tough, funny, and very charismatic hybrid' of The Sims and strategy games.^[12] Joel Durham, Jr. of GameSpy rated it 4/5 stars and wrote, 'More than just Sims in Space, Space Colony mixes city-building, real-time strategy, and offbeat humor to produce an enjoyable and unique strategy title.'^[13]Space Colony: Steam Edition has a score of 74/100 based on 10 reviews on Metacritic.^[14]
